The Science of Scent: How to Find Your Focus
Focusing can be a challenging task for many of us. What we often don't realise is that focus isn't always about what you do, but how you do it.
You don't always have to do more. Sometimes, you simply have to do it right. Create the right atmosphere. Clear your mind. Block out the outside noise. And, finally, focus.
This applies to almost anything you're trying to do well. Whether you're reading a fantasy novel, finishing a work task, baking a cake for a friend's birthday, or making clay mugs as a hobby, every task requires a certain level of focus.
But how do we create that focus?
Scent has a quiet way of helping us do exactly that.
Our sense of smell is closely connected to the parts of the brain responsible for memory, emotion, and association. A familiar scent can bring us back to a place, a person, a memory, or a feeling in an instant.
Certain scents can feel energising, grounding, calming, or comforting. Not because scent changes everything around us, but because of the way our minds respond to it.
It's similar to listening to Destiny by Zero 7 and suddenly being transported to a quiet beach somewhere in the world. You can almost smell the saltwater, hear the waves washing ashore, and feel the sand between your toes, all while sitting quietly in your bedroom.
We've all experienced this in some form. A song can take you back to a summer you haven't thought about in years. The smell of sunscreen can bring back a childhood holiday. The scent of coffee can signal the beginning of a morning before you've even taken your first sip.
Our senses have a remarkable ability to create associations between a feeling, a place and a moment.
That is the power of scent.
